Sophie Wheeldon began her career at BBC Radio Nottingham as a freelancer, working as both a reporter and a producer. After two months, she moved into a fixed‑term role producing the station’s Breakfast programme, where she was responsible for shaping the daily agenda and managing live output.

After a year in radio, she joined BBC East Midlands Today on a one‑year television contract. During this time, she reported on regional stories, presented the breakfast bulletins and lunchtime programmes, and worked across the wider production of the programme.

She later secured a permanent position in the TV newsroom as a planner for BBC East Midlands Today, overseeing the setup of the programme’s daily content and coordinating coverage. Alongside her planning role, she continues to report and present regularly. Most recently, she led the programme’s contribution to the BBC’s NHS coverage day, which highlighted pressures across the health service.
